Emerging Risk Factors for Heart Attacks/Strokes

Homocysteine C-Reactive Protein
A new blood test to determine levels of homocysteine (an amino acid). Recent studies have shown a relationship between high homocysteine and heart disease and stroke. Amino acid may damage artery walls and enhance the blood's ability to clot. Elevated levels of the protein in women increase their heart attack risk as much as seven times. Men with high levels of C-reactive protien, a substance in the blood that indicates the presence of inflammation, may have three times the risk of heart attack and doulbe the risk of stroke.
