The finger stick cholesterol screening is done using a certified, CLIA-waived instrument such as the Cholestech LDX®. Approximately four drops of blood (obtained by pricking the participant’s finger) are placed onto a cartridge and inserted into the instrument. Processing time is five minutes and the results are comparable to those obtained though a laboratory using venipuncture. (Venipuncture cholesterol tests are also available through Summit Health.) A Summit Health professional documents and reviews results with participants at screenings. Two cholesterol screening options are available:
1. Non-Fasting: Total, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and ratio
This test provides total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL. This test gives participants their overall cholesterol level without requiring a ten-hour fast. This test does not provide information on the bad cholesterol (LDL), nor does it require a twelve-hour fast.
2. Fasting: Lipid Profile (Comprehensive Cholesterol Test)
This cholesterol test provides total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, and the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL. The lipid profile is highly recommended for those who are currently working on lifestyle changes to affect their cholesterol levels or for those who would like a more comprehensive consultation with their primary care provider. This test requires a twelve-hour fast.
At the screening event, participants receive a counseling brochure with their test results, as well as recommended cholesterol guidelines. A Summit Health professional reviews results with each participant.
Summit Health recommends offering both cholesterol-screening options (Total and Lipid Profile) as part of the Health Screening Program.
